Cut For Cancer

Nicola Palmer and Dave Palmer of Skillogalee Winery and Restaurant in the Clare Valley will cut their hair to raise money for the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation in support of the Brookman Ward at the Hospital in Adelaide, on 11 February 2012.

To be held on the lawns at Skillogalee House, amongst the rolling vineyards of the Clare Valley. Come and join us for one of the fundraising events of the season.

Guests and donors are invited to buy tickets and attend the fundraiser event to be held on 11th February 2012 at Skillogalee House, from 5.30pm.

The idea was inspired by their four-year-old nephew and grandson, Kai, who is undergoing a battle with Pleuropulmonary Blastoma, a rare type of cancer. The highlight of the night will be when Nicola, who is the manager of the acclaimed Skillogalee restaurant, will chop off her famous 12-year-old dreadlocks, (the honour of pruning the first one will be auctioned!). While Dave, Skillogalee's owner and managing director, will have his head shaved for the cause.

Gourmet catering from some of the region's best known suppliers and producers will be provided as part of the entry ticket, and drinks, including Skillogalee's own award-winning wine, will be available to purchase.  Entertainment will be provided by South Australian musicians, and a variety of local artists and businesses will donate items for auction.  There will be a lucky dip wine sale where wines donated can be purchased, blind, at $20/bottle – we’re hoping to have a number of icon and high-end premium wines within the concealed range.  There will be a number of activities for children.

With an estimated 300 guests, this inaugural event has a fundraising target of $30,000.

Nicola Palmer of Skillogalee Wines for the Women's and Children's Hospital Foundation

In November 2010 when three year old Kai had a really bad temperature, his doctor thought he had pneumonia. This was frightening enough for Kai and his family, but when doctors tried to drain the fluid from his lungs, they discovered something far worse.

Kai was diagnosed with Pleuropulmonary Blastoma (PPB), a rare type of cancer that had resulted in a tumour larger than a grapefruit growing in Kai’s tiny chest.

After more than twelve months of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and two episodes of major surgery, Kai continues to maintain his courage in the face of overwhelming odds.

On Saturday 11 February 2012, Kai’s fifth birthday, his Aunty Nicola will host Cut for Cancer, a special event at Skillogalee, the family’s Clare Valley winery. Nicola will cut her locally famous dreadlocks while Dave Palmer, Nicola’s father and Kai’s grandad, will shave his head.

All of the money raised from this special event will go to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation to benefit The Brookman Ward, where Kai and so many children like him have benefitted from the medical excellence and compassion of The Women’s and Children’s Hospital’s children’s cancer ward.

Follow the instructions above to show your support for Kai and children like him. Join Nicola, Dave and the family at the Cut for Cancer event, or donate via our online donation system.
